Work as a Sociologist

Sociology, in a broad sense is the study of the social behaviour of people, cultures and societies. Sociologists attempt to pin point the reasons for social behaviour and its impact on the immediate society, as well as far reaching consequences on the behaviour of following generations.

This study is not just limited to historical cultures, civilizations and religions but also applies to modern cultures as well. The research could also be related to subjects such as social change in modern society and the reasons behind such change. Reasons could be economical growth; globalisation and social media having resulted in a significant change on society and behaviour of people within that society.

This is massive field of study. Research is aimed at social behaviour and effects; on society or a group of people. This could cover any group or groups of people in the world, regardless of the size or the populations of the study subjects.

Education Required :

Sociology is a specialized field of work, a fair bit of study and preparation are required; before one can become a sociologist. An interested candidate would need to study humanities in the final year of school, followed by a graduation in sociology and finally a master's degree in sociology. Interested candidates can also specialise in other areas; such as mass communication or human resources, which will help them later on.

Skills Required :

The skills required to be a successful sociologist are; the ability to understand and empathize with different cultures and people, analytical skills, a capability for strenuous field work, good communication skills as well as, the ability to understand when communicating with people who speak a other languages; and finally a successful sociologist needs to be objective.

Career prospects :

A sociologist has many career prospects. They could be employed in a number of different fields, some examples of this is for the government, United Nations research groups, private research groups and organizations to research a society for marketing purposes and others options as well.

Pay scale :

What can you expect in terms of remuneration working as a sociologist? If you are working in the government sector you can earn up to 40,000 rupees as an assistant professor every month and professors earn between 60,000 to 70,000 per month.

In the private sector you can expect to earn a little bit more with a salary between 80,000 to 90,000 rupees per month. There are a variety of different options for a sociologist to choose from. One can choose to work with marketing firms, in the media, with corporate organizations or with educational institutes.

Work Schedule :

The work schedule that a sociologist can expect will be something on the lines of this; between 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM lectures in the morning or attending seminars, lunch break between 1 to 2 pm, between 2 to 4 PM visits a nearby location possibly a village or another location to research social habits and write reports or research and finally between 5 to 6 PM a sociologist can be expected to make a visit to a TV News channel or give an interview related to the subject.
