A Relationship Manager or RM is a person who is employed by banks to represent them. They not only serve as the representative of the bank, but also perform a variety of tasks. Their job profile encompasses creating and nurturing a healthy relationship with each customer, training the other employees of the bank and maintaining and checking at regular intervals the records and files of the bank. Apart from all this, Relationship Managers are also responsible for forming the team of DSAs, i.e. the Direct Sales Associates and the Direct Sales Team (DST). Apart from forming them, the RMs also train, look after and manage the teams.

All the interaction that a bank has with its clients and customers transpires through the Relationship Managers. They manage the investment of the clients and also provide guidance to them for making the appropriate investment decisions. These days some investment companies are also following suit and are on the lookout for young professionals who can serve as Relationship Managers to them. Thus creating, immense employment opportunities in the field.

To get into this field of work, one could take up Math or Commerce in the XII standard. At the graduation level, a degree in an should be opted for. After graduation, one must go for a postgraduate degree in Master of Business Administration (MBA). Some banks only employ candidates with an MBA degree for the post of a Relationship Managers while others also promote some bank executives to the post.

Indian institutes like the Indian Institutes of Management, the International College of Financial Planning, New Delhi and the Faculty of Management Studies (Varanasi, and Delhi) offer some of the best MBA courses.

A Relationship Manager is very highly-paid in India owing to the rapid increase in the demand of people from this profession. The pay scale is liable to vary from company to company. One’s experience and performance also counts. While a Relationship Manager, beginner can make up to 25,000 INR to 30,000 INR a month in the beginning; a Branch Manager has a monthly income in the bracket of 40,000 INR to 50,000 INR a month. A District Manager is paid 55,000 INR to 65,000 INR per month and a Regional Manager (AVP) makes up to 1,00,000 INR to 1,50,000 INR on a monthly basis.

Someone who is great at strategizing is a good manager of people and has good communication skills can perform well in this profession. One should also have good administrative skills and be a good leader. Excellent networking skills are also helpful in this job. A pleasant and charming personality works as an added advantage.
