Urologist - The healing Touch

The term ‘Urologist’ has been derived from the word ‘urinary’ and aptly so as the work of a urologist revolves around medical problems related to the urinary system of the body. Urology is a super-specialty branch of healing surgery; dealing with issues related to the urinary tracts of human beings and the reproductive system of males in particular.

The work of a urologist includes diagnosing, treating, nursing and bringing back to health patients with urological disorders. They are assigned the work of repairing, treating and healing organs such as the uterus, the kidney, the liver, the urinary tracts, the urethra, and the male reproductive organs.

Urology is a branch that is made up of many sub-specialty branches. A urologist often recommends the patient to another sub-specialty urologist who might be able to help the patient better regarding the specific problem or the treatment of some specific organ. If the case calls for it, sometimes the urologist is also required to work in co-ordination with another surgeon who may be from a similar, or an entirely different field of surgery.

If one wants to opt for this career, the basic procedure is the same as for all aspirants of medicine. One first needs to complete his class XII with Sciences (with Physics, Chemistry and Biology) which should be followed by a degree of MBBS. After completing MBBS, a candidate can go for their various MS degrees. Once one is done with MS, they can concentrate on preparing to take the Mhc. entrance examination.

Many reputed medical institutes in India like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, the Sanjay Gandhi PG Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, the Jawaharlal Institute of PG Medical Education and Research, the Christian Medical College, Vellore and the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal offer such and other courses.

A urologist in India is very highly paid. If one choses to practice at a private hospital they can make up to and sometimes more than 1,00,000 INR per month even as a beginner. In a government hospital, the salary starts with 50,000 INR to 60,000 INR for a month but can escalate to 75,000 INR per month within a short period of time. In both the kind of hospitals, the pay rises sharply and at frequent intervals with experience and also the number of cases one takes on.

Some urologists also prefer to practice independently but it should be kept in mind that for one to open up a private practice, they need to have a lot of experience. Also if one wishes to open up an independent nursing home or clinic, the need for the availability of a large amount of investment must be kept in mind.

To be a successful urologist, one needs to have certain qualities; the most important of those being, compassion, patience, and presence of mind. Not just urology but all fields of surgery demand these. One must also always be ready to attend to patients even if it is in the middle of the night or way beyond it. The ability to think clearly and accurately under pressure is also a must.
