Dental Science is the branch of medical science that deals with the study of diseases or disorders related to teeth and gums. It also deals with structure, development, abnormalities, diagnosis prevention, and treatment of diseases related to teeth, gums, cells, and tissues of the mouth.
The word dentistry is derived from Odontology from the ancient Greek word odious, "tooth. Odontology stands for the study of the structure, development, and abnormalities of the teeth.
As this is an undergraduate degree in Dental Surgery, the time duration to complete the degree ranges from three to five years among various Universities and depending upon the internship. This course can be pursued as correspondence or through distance learning also; this also affects the duration of the course.
The Bachelor of Dental Science is divided into two or more semesters. The methodology of the study involves Classroom lectures and seminars; Demonstrations, Lab techniques, group discussions, etc. Dental Materials, Oral Pathology, Pedodontics, Oral Medicines and Radiology, Community dentistry, and surgical procedures are some of the basic subjects and topics that have been undertaken in the course.
