The name Ghorakhal refers to the events of 1857, when a British General, anxious to escape the Awadh rebels, stumbled into this area and his horse died while drinking water from a nearby pond, thus the name Ghora (Horse) Khal (pond). The British rulers awarded the Ghorakhal land to General Wheeler in 1870.
