News large description:

The MTech Aviation course introduced at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) in 2013 has failed to take off in five years. As per the reply given to a SPPU senate member ahead of its annual meeting, only eight admissions have taken place in the course since 2013, with two years recording zero admission. The senate will meet on Saturday.

GOOGLE_AD_DATA

Ahead of the meeting, senate members had raised questions to the university administration on various subjects. Senate member Santosh Dhore had sought information from the administration about the total number of admissions in the MTech Aviation course since 2013, the total intake capacity of the course, money spent by the university on the course and fees deposited by students so far.

Management council member Prasenjit Fadnavis provided the information that so far, eight admissions have taken place in five years in the course, which has an intake capacity of six students per year. The information added that it was only in the first year of the introduction of the course that it saw full six admissions. However the year after that, not a single student took admission. In 2015-16 and 2017-18, only one student took admission while in 2016-17, not a single student took admission. The admission process for 2018-19 is still ongoing.

The university has collected Rs 26 lakh towards fees from students while expenditure so far has been Rs 21.57lakh.

“I had learnt from sources that there was a plan to buy a simulator for Rs 1crore for students enrolled in the course. However, it also came to my knowledge that the number of admissions were dismal and hence I wanted to confirm the same. University’s resources should be spent judiciously…,” said Dhore.
News Source (Indian Express)
