90% Indians who study MBBS abroad fail to clear qualifiers here says | Pralhad Joshi

Union parliamentary affairs minister and Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi on Monday claimed about “90% of Indians who study medicine abroad fail to clear qualifying exams in India”.

However, while responding to a question from TOI, Joshi added: “This is not the right time to debate why students are moving out to study medicine.”

Those who pursue MBBS abroad are mandated to pass Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) to be able to work as doctors in India, according to the rulebook.

On efforts being made to evacuate Indian students from Ukraine, he said India has deployed additional staff at its embassy there to ensure their safe return.

On rumours that Indians are being targeted in the war-torn country after India abstained from voting at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Joshi said the government is yet to verify such videos being shared on social media.

However, he admitted that students are facing trouble and unable to get food and water, particularly in Kharkiv and Kyiv.

“We are in touch with the Ukraine government and Russia daily basis, and we will soon bring all students back home,” he said.

Let us not Politicise evacuation: Gowda

Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda on Monday urged not to politicise the evacuation process from Ukraine, and urged everyone to work together.

In a series of tweets, he said: “... Scoring points at this hour of crisis will make us look bad. I have been watching videos of our young citizens stranded in Ukraine making fervent pleas for evacuation. It is heart-wrenching to see their plight. But when war is raging in that country and there is so much uncertainty on the ground, and when operational links are broken, it is only fair that we support our officers and embassies to focus on the job at hand.”
