Dairy science focuses on the science of production and maintenance of all dairy products like cheese, curd, yogurt, etc including milk. Professionals of this stream must learn everything from raising cattle to managing a dairy plant which requires knowledge of animal nutrition, reproduction, lactation, and business.
The duration of the course for Master of Science (Dairy Engineering) is 2 years for graduates with at least four years of professional degrees. Those with 3 years bachelor's degree will undergo pre-requisite courses as decided by the Board of Studies and the duration will be 3 years. However, the duration may vary according to college requirements.
Distance learning programs are also provided by the Universities.
The main objective of this course is to prevent spoilage of milk and its products, improve quality, and make milk edible and safe for human consumption. For this, an individual must be able to produce a healthy dairy herd, inspect dairy products and assist with dairy farm management which they learn throughout this curriculum. Therefore the candidate must be prepared to work in factories more than offices.
