These schools groom children from a young and impressionable age under the guidance of dedicated teachers into professionals and citizens who are embodiments of compassion, have concern for nature, practice international peace and nurture a spirit of community service.
They are aided partly or fully by the local, state or central government and were established with an aim to provide free and compulsory education to the children belonging to economically backward classes. Some schools charge a nominal fee.
The medium of instruction in most schools is Tamil or English with the latter being preferred by parents for better chances while seeking admission in reputed colleges for degree courses or for job opportunities. Most schools follow State, CBSE or ICSE curriculum.
Many parents prefer public schools since they get similar facilities and environment for a much lesser fee as compared to private schools. According to RTE, private schools reserve a certain percentage of seats for children from poorer classes whose fees will be funded by the government.
This city rich in culture, tradition, beaches and automobile industry is home to many migrants from smaller townships seeking employment with a hope to get a better future. This city also has a large section of an unorganized sector of workers which contributes to a lion’s share of the revenue earned.
The government and some NGOs are working together to improve the quality of teaching-learning in public schools. Students are offered free mid-day meals, books and uniforms to retain them in school for education.

Dedicated teachers develop not just academic but other skills as well by encouraging students to participate in music, dramatics, and science clubs and so on. These schools have modern labs, computers, sports facilities and auditorium for the overall-learning environment.
Leadership qualities and self-confidence are improved by participation in NCC, Scouts, and Guides. They are also encouraged to undertake certain external examinations to test their skill-sets like Math-Olympiad, NTSE and so on.
