Modern High School for Girls, committed to developing creative and independent individuals, was founded by Mrs. B.M. Birla on January 3 1952. The School was set up at 28, Camac Street initially with Mrs. Violet Clarke as the first Principal. In 1953, the senior school moved to a new location 33, Theatre Road (now Shakespeare Sarani), Calcutta (now Kolkata). The junior school remained at the same location.
The foundation stone for the present school building was laid by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. B.C. Roy on December 9, 1957 and in March 1960; the senior school was transferred to the present building at 78, Syed Amir Ali Avenue.
The school had efficient Headmistresses all along. Mrs. Clarke was followed by Mrs Rebeiro during the early 60’s, followed by Mrs. Pastakia from 1963-65. Mrs I.L. Wilson de Roze was Headmistress for the longest period, from 1965-2000. Mrs. D. Kar, joined in April, 2000 as Principal and now our Director after Mrs. Kaveri Dutt has become our Principal since April 2012.
