An English-Medium school, in its true sense, was an extreme need of Behala for a long time. Hundreds of students, despite multifarious difficulties, had to go a long way from Behala to seek education through the medium of English – the universally accepted Lingua Franca of the World. The attention of Dr. J. L. Banerjee, a renowned physician of Behala, was drawn to the plight of the students. With strong feeling and sincere urge for education, Dr. Banerjee established Orient Day School in 1977, the academic session of which started from 1979. In April, 1977, Dr. Banerjee most generously transferred the school unconditionally to the Management of The Orient Education Society (Registered under the Registration of Societies Act, 1961). The school is being managed by a Board of Governors headed by Dr. J.L. Banerjee, the Founder-President. At first, the school was up to Standard-III with 100 students on the rolls. Dr. P.R. Sengupta took charge as the Head of the Institution on 1978 and worked untiringly with Dr. J.L. Banerjee to get the school affiliated to the CISCE, New Delhi in 1985. Dr. Sengupta was also instrumental in elevating the school upto the level of ISC (10 + 2) standard in 1995. After nourishing the dream-child of Dr. J.L. Banerjee for over thirty years, Dr. P.R. Sengupta retired in the year 2009. Since then, the school is flourishing under the able and dynamic guidance of Mr. Jayanta Banerjee, the Principal and his efficient and dedicated band of colleagues. Orient Day School is recognised by the Govt. of West Bengal and affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi.
