Fashion Merchandising is an off-shoot of fashion designing. Fashion merchandisers extend their services to a fashion house or export house. They buy apparel and clothing from fashion designers and stock them for clients who buy them. Fashion merchandisers need to have knowledge about trends in latest fashion, materials, textures and other important aspects in fashion industry. They should have good analytical skills and also communication skills. Fashion merchandisers usually buy apparel and outfits in fashion weeks and also from individual designers.
Country's premium fashion designing institute National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) offers degree cum diploma in fashion design and information technology. The duration of this degree course is three and a half years.
Eligibility
Fashion merchandising is offered as a diploma and undergraduate level course. For diploma and undergraduate courses, students need to pass 10+2 pattern from a recognized board or university. Few colleges conduct an entrance exam as well.
Course Content
Subjects like Advertising and Promotion, Business communications, History of Fashion, Marketing, Principle of Management, Apparel Structure and Design, Accounting Principles, Advertising Promotion and Retail Operations are taught. At undergraduate level, more subjects related to Business law, Computer applications in Business, Fashion Show Illustration, Fashion Show Production, and Textile Science will be taught. At the end of the course students will have to do internship spanning from three to six months.
At the end of the course students have to work on a project for the stipulated time.
Scope
Students after the completion of the course can work as sales managers, fashion designers, advertising managers, buyers and purchasing agents, sales representatives and fashion merchandisers in fashion and export houses. After gaining experience, candidates can work independently by starting their own consultancy.
