Textile and Apparel Designing

Textile industry in India contributes to 17% of export earnings. The sector is expanding because of the growing demand globally. Indian textiles have good reputation in international scenario. Students should be extremely creative and talented to pursue this course.

Eligibility

Textile and apparel designing is offered as a certificate, diploma and degree course. Usually students must have completed 10+2 pattern from a recognized board or university. Some institutions like NIFT conduct separate entrance exam for screening the students.

Course Content

Subjects like Textile science, Textile chemistry, Textile and Garment Quality Control, Grading, Fabric manufacture, Traditional Textiles and Embroideries of India, Fashion Apparel design, Application of IT in Textile Science and Apparel design and Application of IT in Apparel design and Textile Science.

At the end of the course, an internship is offered to students.

Scope

Career opportunities exist in related fields like construction textiles, medical textiles, baby diapers, home textiles, blankets and travelling goods, tent and camping goods. Graduates in textile and apparel designing can work in retail management, fashion writing, museum collection management, theatrical costuming and production development fields. Options are available to work as fashion designer, operations manager, fashion consultant, textile research scientist, technical designer, quality assurance evaluator and store manager. After gaining experience in the related field, candidates can set up their own consultancy as well.
