This school was started by Mrs. Pritpal Singh in the year 1979. After having worked in Bishop Cotton School for 13 years and heading the Junior Section there, She left in 1977 and got started with Shimla Public School and worked single handedly for many years. It was because of her long hour of work and extreme dedication that SPS came to be recognised amongst the top few schools of Shimla.

Shimla Public School was a Nursery School in the initial years. With each session the reputation of the School became known to the people, the pressure from the parents increased and a new class was added each year. In 1986 the school got its Affiliation to the council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi. The first batch of I.C.S.E was in the year 1990.

SPS has a Hostel too, which was started with the persuasion of one parent who left two of his kids as he was unable to stay in Shimla and did not want his children to leave the School. The Hostel grew over the years and today there are 115 students in the Hostel. Almost 50% of -them are foreign nationals.

The School takes part in all Inter School Events. We are constrained with space but we make the best of what we have. We have a very dedicated and hard working academic staff. Mrs. Reena Singh, is the Head of time, regular tests are held, homework is not too much. We call outside faculty to add to the performance of the senior students, especially in Maths and Science.

In the Hostel we excel in personal care of kids. There are two wardens on the campus, and Mr. Mrs.Pritinder Singh, of the Management, live on the campus. There are 650 children in the School and 40 Teachers. For the Hostel students we have 6 prep Teachers who come every evening from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

There are 4 Houses. Tagore, Patel, Gandhi & Nehru. All members of the Staff have been allotted Houses and there is one House Master incharge for each House. Various Inter-House competitions are held every year. Activities like Basketball, Athletics, Cross Country races, Dramatics, Indoor-Shooting, Badminton, Music and Dancing, Cooking, Trekking are carried out in the school.

The School has a School-Bus that is available to the day scholars for coming to school and to the hostel students for tours and treks.
