Sciences belong to traditional and fundamental subject group pursued by students since many years before specializations, applied sciences and professional courses took over. Still sciences group did not lose its sheen as nature is understood only through continued basic research. Only science provides basic knowledge in respect of diagnosing, analyzing and solving new problems being faced by us which are later scaled up applied scientists and engineers.
Sciences group comprises of five main branches namely, mathematics, physics, chemistry, botany and zoology. Sub branches such as geology, geochemistry, geophysics, biochemistry, analytical chemistry etc have cropped but they take the student to narrower class of studies. At undergraduate (UG) level main branches of sciences impart knowledge comprehensively at in chosen three groups namely 1) Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry (MPC), 2) Botany, Zoology and Chemistry (BZC).
Being fundamental course, sciences the student has vast scope in pursuing the career in unlimited combinations. For example, UG student studying MPC can choose either of mathematics, physics and chemistry for specializing at PG level and same is the case with UG BZC student. Further, he can register of research leading to doctoral degree within the chosen subject at post graduation level. Alternatively, the student can take teacher training courses like B.Ed to take up teaching as career. With simple graduation, the student is also eligible for pursuing civil services, management courses like MBA, computer courses like MCA as well. The student is also eligible to register with professional institutes like ICWA, CA, CS, CFA and complete respective programmes and take up career in finance and business administration.
Almost every small town in the country today has at least on college offering admission of UG courses in sciences. For a serious student who intends to pursue career in research the institutes like IIT's, IISc, TIFR, IISER, BITS offers comprehensive courses. Among the traditional colleges, St. Stephen College Delhi, St. Xavier's Kolkata, Loyala Chennai tops the popularity charts.
