These schools aim at the academic and holistic education of students in order to produce well-rounded personalities which will allow them to excel in a field of their choice.

These schools follow a state curriculum or CBSE curriculum. These schools are funded by the state, central or local governments. The selection of head-of-school and faculty is undertaken by the government.

These schools aim at educating children from different economic classes and charge no fees or a very nominal one. They encourage students to continue their education at least up to secondary level by providing mid-day meals and other attractions like free books, uniforms and so on.

Since most parents feel that the English language is necessary to procure a berth in institutes offering degrees which can fetch jobs, many public schools have been made English-medium.
