Mechanical engineering is a specialized branch in engineering. Mechanical engineers are required to perform their duties in manufacturing plants and industries. They deal with the setting up of machinery and maintenance of plants. Mechanical engineering is a full time four year degree course.
Production Engineering principles are applied in joining processes, casting, die and mould design, CADD/CAM, automation, Inventory control, Operation Research, Mechatronics, Supply chain Management and robotics. With the emergence of latest production methods and control systems, demand for Production Engineers is increasing.
Eligibility
Students who have passed 10+2 pattern from a recognized board or university are eligible to apply for the course. They have to appear for entrance exams like AIEEE, IIT JEE and other state board exams. Good score in the exam is a pre-requisite for seeking admission in a reputed college.
Course Content
First year in engineering is common to all branches. From second year onwards different subjects like engineering physics, mathematics, environment and ecology, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, material science, numerical analysis and computer programming, strength of materials, kinematics, manufacturing processes, robotics, computer aided design and manufacturing are taught.
Scope
Mechanical engineers can find employment in various fields like automobiles, aeronautical, space research, bio mechanical industry and air conditioning. Mechanical engineers lend their services in new fields like bio-medical engineering, nano technology, environmental engineering and energy conservation. Job openings exist in private and public enterprises.
Candidates who are interested in entrepreneurship can set up their own industries as well. Academically oriented students can opt for higher degrees like M.Tech and Ph.D. They can later pursue a career in teaching profession.
Colleges
All branches of Indian Institute of Technology located in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Kanpur and Kharagpur.
