Universities in India can be established in multiple ways: through the Central Act, Provincial Act, or State Act. All Universities in India must be recognized and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC is a statutory body set up by the Indian Union government in accordance with the UGC Act 1956 under the Ministry of Human Resource Development and is charged with coordination, determination, and maintenance of standards of higher education. The Central Government provides grants to the UGC. The Central Government is also responsible for declaring an educational institution as "Deemed-to-be University" on the recommendations of the UGC.
SRM University Sikkim came to be in Oct of 2013 with the passage of The Shri Ramasamy Memorial University, Sikkim Act 2013. The Act was passed in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly on the 9th of Oct 2013.
Sikkim Manipal University was born with the basic objective of strengthening the close link of education to skill development and making the youth of Sikkim educated, skilled, and employable, giving them the capacity to harness diverse opportunities both within and outside Sikkim. This will also create more job opportunities for our youth, thus solving the growing unemployment in the State.
The Sikkim Manipal University was established in 1995. It is the first government-private initiative in the region. SMU is recognized by the University Grants Commission and approved by the Government of India. It is the first-ever Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in the country for higher Education and Health Care services.
The ICFAI University, Sikkim has been established under Section 4 (2) of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India University, Sikkim Act 2004 (Act 9 of 2004) passed by the Legislative Assembly of Sikkim. The University has been notified under Notification No.9/LD/2004 Dated, 15-10-2004. New Delhi.
The Vinayaka Missions Sikkim University( VMSU ), was established in the year 2008 by an ACT ( No. 11 of 2008 ) of State Assembly passed by the Government of Sikkim and was subsequently notified by the Govt. of Sikkim gazette.
The TKVTSS Medical Education & Charitable trust as its sponsor aims at providing quality education in the fields of sciences, humanities & social sciences, medical, dental, paramedical, engineering and management, architecture, etc by establishing and management, architecture, etc by establishing appropriate infrastructure suitable to spread the higher education(HE), vocational education & training (VET) and industry-specific employment-oriented programs for the development of trained manpower at various levels enabling overall growth of Sikkim, and also, help India in establishing global of Sikkim, and also help India in establishing global linkages as a supplier as trained human resources across the world.
