Master of Law Overview

LLM is the abbreviated form of Master of Laws internationally recognized as Academic Postgraduate Degree. It is derived from latin word Legum Magister which actually means ‘master of laws’. Legum is the plural of latin word ‘lex’ means “Specific Law”. In latin plural is denoted by double letter that’s how LLM had come into existence.

In India Master of Law is of 2 years which is divided into 4 semesters. The course structure of LLM depends upon various specializations offered by various institutes and Universities. This course is offered as Distance Learning as well as correspondence by some of the institutes and Universities of India. There is not as such age limitation to pursue this course, especially if enrolling in distance learning program.

What is Master of Laws (LLM)?

As it is a Postgraduate Master Degree program, it enables an individual to gain in-depth knowledge in a particular area of Law.This is mainly done by those who want to expertise themselves in any specific area of law through research. The course starts with foundational subjects and takes it forward to the specialized subjects according to one’s choice.Family Law, Taxation Law, International Trade Law etc. are some the specializations offered in Master of Law.

Eligibility Criteria

A Law graduate from a recognized University.
A non-law graduate can also pursue LLM.
The minimum aggregate should be 55 % throughout to enroll for LLM.
Candidates in the final year of LLB can also apply.
