Varanasi, or Benaras, (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world and is situated on the banks of the holy river Ganga and the City - known for spirituality, where life is obsessed with unending search for truth and knowledge. It could be the City's inherent zest for education and learning that prompted the great visionary Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya to choose this holy land for establishing his dream institution - Banaras Hindu University, in the year 1916.

Being the largest residential institution in Asia, spread across 1300 acres of land, it offers quality education all in one campus, in almost all the branches of learning. This university is spread over 4000 acres in two campuses have 4 institutes, 15 faculties, 140 teaching departments, 4 interdisciplinary schools teaches Technology, Ayurveda, Agriculture, Management, Languages, Mountaineering, Visual arts etc. This university teaches everything from practicality to imagination. This campus has well maintained roads, extensive greenery, an air strip, traditional temple, smart classes, over 50 hostels, big outdoor and indoor stadiums, swimming pool and architecturally delightful buildings which provide the necessary infrastructure for the overall personality growth of its students. The University family comprises of over 30,000 students belonging to different streams of life, castes, religions and races, about 2,000 teachers and nearly 5,000 non-teaching staff.
