Jindal Global University (JGU), imparts a rigorous and multi-disciplinary legal education with a view to producing world-class legal professionals, scholars, and public servants. JGLS empowers its students with knowledge, skills, and vision to meet the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing world.

The School’s expert faculty comes from across the globe and engages in critical scholarship that contributes to public debates both in India and abroad. Research centres at JGLS have been established to inject new ideas into cutting edge issues of law and policy ranging from women’s rights to international trade. To facilitate learning and research, JGLS has entered into collaborations, exchange programmes, and research partnerships with elite universities and institutions from across the globe.

JGLS is committed to providing a world-class legal education to a diverse and talented body of students. At JGLS students are given exposure to new ideas, international perspectives, and innovative teaching in an encouraging and open academic environment. Our students have interned with top global law firms, leading lawyers, prominent judges, and a diverse collection of NGOs. With a high quality education bolstered by unique work experiences, our graduating students will be armed with the skills they need to succeed in a diverse set of fields, both in India and abroad.

Our mission is implemented through the generosity of the Jindal Group, a multinational Indian corporate business house. It is hoped that O.P. Jindal Global University, a non-profit institution, can provide a new model for the funding of non-profit higher education through corporate and individual philanthropy so that India can produce the bright young graduates it needs. JGLS and JGU are both fully recognized by the Bar Council of India and the University Grants Commission.

The vision in establishing JGU and JGLS is to impart globalized education with a view to producing world-class professionals, scholars, and academics in law and other disciplines. Globalization has opened various opportunities and challenges which have created the need for competent academics, scholars and professionals. The vision of JGU and JGLS is to fulfill this need by equipping their students and faculty with the knowledge, skills, scholarship and vision to meet these challenges and demands of globalization. India, which is on the verge of becoming an economic superpower must produce world-class professionals, scholars, and academics to compete globally. History indicates that excellence in education leads to economic growth and development. The Founders of JGU and JGLS, having realized this, have come up with the mission to establish this global institution in India, which will be comparable to the best in the world.Public funds are scarcely available for higher education in India. Private funds are therefore required in the current educational scenario. The gap between the availability and the need for funds in higher education could be met only by corporate and individual philanthropy. Our mission is implemented through corporate philanthropy and commitment to corporate social responsibility of the Jindal Group, which is a multinational Indian corporate business house. It is hoped that JGU and JGLS will provide new opportunities in the field of private non-profit higher education. To achieve the vision of providing globalized education in India, JGLS has recruited the best faculty from across the globe. JGLS has entered into collaborations, exchange programmes, research partnerships and other forms of engagement and interaction with top universities and institutions across the globe which are willing to share their invaluable intellectual resources developed over decades. JGU aspires to build upon the experiences of the past and the innovations in teaching that are taking place at present to create for the future an institution of global excellence. JGLS is providing world-class legal education to a diverse and talented body of students, who have joined the University in September 2009. They are given international exposure at the JGLS. There are faculty and student exchange programmes and academic collaboration arrangements with leading law schools, such as Harvard, Yale, NYU, Sydney, Keio and many other reputed universities in the world. Students are provided support and training to participate in national and international mooting competitions and other student activities. JGLS is also regularly hosting international events, conferences, seminars, symposia, workshops and round table events.

Teaching

Excellent scholars are attracted from different parts of the world, including India. JGU and JGLS is encouraging both traditional and innovative teaching methods to accommodate teachers coming from diverse backgrounds; it is believed that such approach to teaching will be good for students and will be more effective. The curriculum is modern and comparative in nature with the flexibility to introduce electives to deal with emerging legal issues. It has taken into account the context of globalization and market economy. As part of providing global legal education and training, students are required to obtain insights into the practical side of law and undergo internships with leading law firms, lawyers, judges and NGOs. Education and teaching strategies are designed not only to foster a congenial and effective educational environment and produce high quality graduates, but also to instill in students self-confidence, self-reliance and, more importantly, a sense of commitment towards society at large.

Research

To stimulate research, a number of research centres have been established to encourage faculty members to do research and publish on cutting edge legal issues. Faculty members are provided with competent research assistants. It is envisioned that the faculty will be able to attract research funding from institutions in India and abroad. Teaching and research are interlinked and mutually reinforcing. Encouraging the highest quality research activities will be important for JGU and JGLS and will be the main component of a faculty member’s duty. Faculty members will be expected to disseminate their research findings to the wider world of scholarship. Research is the best tool to disseminate legal knowledge. Faculty members will be expected and assisted to obtain research collaborations and grants from institutions in Asia and beyond. All forms of research and scholarship will be encouraged. These will include: critical analysis and interpretation of legislation and case law; highlighting practical legal issues confronting society and the individual; economy and the state; interdisciplinary and comparative study of law; and the preparation of materials or reports for submission to legislatures, courts, administrative bodies, national and international agencies.

Faculty members are required to publish learned books, book chapters, articles, reviews, and comments. Student instructional materials such as casebooks and course manuals on a given subject or topic published by a faculty member will also form part of that faculty member’s track record. A faculty member’s research track record is taken into account in determining which position that faculty member should be appointed to, and whether promoted. Apart from teaching and research, other academic contributions of faculty members are also fundamental to the development of an internationally reputed law school. JGLS is encouraging scholarly activities by faculty members, such as lending their expertise to legislators and policy makers, inter-governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations, offering educational programs to professional bodies (including law firms) and serving on other universities and professional bodies.

Academic Freedom

Good legal research can take place only in a free and fair environment. And only such environment will allow a researcher to challenge, question, think, examine, evaluate, engage, and develop scholarship and understanding on various issues that affect law and justice. JGLS is developing research capacities in several different areas of law. Research in law and its administration should also focus on the need for the protection of the rule of law and its impact on governance. To promote research and advanced legal studies in a university, one of the important goals should be to ensure that legal scholars are given the maximum possible encouragement and freedom for the research and study they are pursuing. JGLS has given freedom to scholars to collaborate and develop useful partnerships and research exchange relationships with other

Student-centered Learning

At JGLS, students are given the opportunity to specialize in different areas of public and private law. It is hoped that students will be involved with legal aid clinics where they will have occasion to appreciate the challenges of poverty and issues relating to legal empowerment. With such relevant legal education, students graduating from JGLS will have good job opportunities in diverse fields, both in India and abroad. JGLS has provided state of the art facilities for students; the campus is connected through the Internet and have provided for the richest international and national databases; it has facilities such as video conferencing and relaying of live lectures from other venues. The library is fully computerized and is connected with other libraries of the world. A strategic collaboration is being developed with the law librarians of the Harvard Law School, Yale Law School and the New York University School of Law, some of whom have helped the JGLS in establishing its law library.

Our students and faculty members are provided with IT enabled services so that they can work speedily, efficiently and effectively. Apart from standard books, journals, periodicals also available are a host of other wide-ranging international and national research materials, either on the Internet or otherwise. Although the primary mission of JGLS is to teach about the law and society as well as the basic lawyering skills required for a successful lawyer, it is providing to its students broad liberal education to prepare them to take up leadership roles in their chosen fields of work. To achieve this, liberal arts and non-law courses are being taught alongside law courses. It will also be the purpose of legal education to inculcate in students a sense of professionalism, responsibility towards society, respect for the rule of law and fundamental freedoms of others as well as the virtues of honesty, integrity and rectitude in their relationships with others.
