The University came into establishment in 2013, vide Uttaranchal University Act, 2012 (Uttarakhand Act. No. 11 of 2013) as a Private University. Uttaranchal University is recognized by the UGC under sections 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, 1956, as well as by various statutory bodies at both the state and national levels. Founded by the Sushila Devi Centre for Professional Studies & Research, a society registered under the Societies Registration Act (1860), the University has achieved significant milestones, including receiving the prestigious "A+ Grade" accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). This accomplishment positions Uttaranchal University among the top 5% of higher education institutions in the country. With a strong emphasis on research and innovation, the University has established an Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre with support from the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and is associated with ACIC, Uttaranchal University Foundation. These initiatives support industries across Uttarakhand and North India while fostering an entrepreneurial spirit among students.

The University has been featured in the WURI Rankings from 2022 to 2025, followed by its appearance in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings for 2024 and 2025, underscoring its strong contributions to global research and innovative practices. In 2024, it achieved a remarkable position- fifth nationally and twenty-fifth internationally- under UNSDG Goal 7 (Affordable & Clean Energy) in the THE World Impact Rankings. The University further strengthened its global footprint with its inclusion in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2026, QS Sustainability Rankings, and THE Interdisciplinary Science Rankings in 2025. On the national front, the School of Pharmacy (Uttaranchal Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences) secured the 75th rank in NIRF 2025.
