About Centurion University of Technology and Management, Paralakhemundi

Spread over 120 acres on the foothills of the Eastern ghats in a serene environment lies the main campus of Centurion University in Paralakhemundi. It is the only technological University in South Odisha.

The journey of Centurion University of Technology and Management (CUTM) began in the year 2005 by a group of ambitious academics with aspirations to provide high quality education both nationally and internationally. The first step in this direction was to take over an ailing engineering Institute, the Jagannath Institute for Technology and Management (JITM) in one of the most challenging tribal districts of Odisha and one which was considered to be a left-wing extremist affected area. Subsequently, JITM was transformed into Centurion University of Technology and Management in August 2010, through an act of Odisha Legislative Assembly. It became the First Multi-Sector State Private University in Odisha.

Our founders during their earlier stint as teachers realized that education is one of the most powerful tool for empowerment, was in reality designed for the elite. In response, they embarked on this ambitious journey with the aim to bring employment-linked education within the reach of those who needed it the most. As a result, Centurion University has skilled, trained and linked 80,000+ “poor, more poor and ultra poor” youth to find gainful employment. Through five Social Enterprises established under the University, Teaching, Training, Production and Community engagement is converged into mainstream education thus enabling the University to ensure hands-on knowledge, experiential learning and practice-linked pedagogy with the flexibility of horizontal and vertical mobility.

Their vision was to build Centurion University brick by brick not only as a home for research and education but as an institution which provides opportunities for growth to all students from across the social canvas and they have succeeded in consolidating Centurion University as a truly remarkable place, with expertise across a wide range of disciplines and a superb academic atmosphere. A Pioneer in Skill Integrated Higher Education

Centurion University is duly recognized as a pioneer is ‘Skill Integrated Higher Education”. Its unique model lays specific emphasis on creating sustainable livelihoods on a national scale in challenging geographies through education that results in employability and sparks entrepreneurship. This model has been recognized by multiple Governments (Central and State), International Organizations such as UNESCO and the World Bank as well as Policy Think-tanks such as the Niti Ayog. Recently, Centurion University’s School of Vocational Education and Training has been recognized as a Center of Excellence by Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India. It is the only University in India to be recognized as such.

Centurion has embraced the Agenda for Sustainable Development and the associated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since being formally announced in 2015. SDGs have been both formally and informally used as a guiding framework and are now firmly embedded in the Centurion DNA. Whilst having an indirect impact and contribution on almost all 17 SDGs, Centurion has specifically focused on 7 SDGs and embedded it in everything from its strategy, governance, institutional management and outcomes.

Centurion has focused on ‘hands-on’, ‘experience based’, ‘practice oriented’ learning that creates transformative impact through community centric innovation and action research. While promoting Nano, Mini and Micro Enterprises, the University works toward learning experiences that are ‘quantifiable’, ‘sustainable’, ‘scalable’ and ‘replicable’.

Career Development Cell

Students are encouraged to seek opportunities and enhance their learning experience with practical knowledge. The Career Development Cell provides a platform for the students and the companies as well so that the collaboration is mutually beneficial.

Once a student enters this University, the Institution takes the entire responsibility to develop that individual into a personality. The students are overwhelmed with the opportunities they are provided with. They are left open to umpteen number of choices lying in front of them to choose in parallel to their academics. Centurion believes in enhancing its students through dedicated concentration on each and every student and sees to that everyone enhances their talents with the opportunities they are provided with. Once the placement season commences, one can feel the vibrant environment on the campus. Talents go barely unrecognized at Centurion as we leave no stone unturned to place our students.

Career Development Cell carries the twin responsibility of conducting Career Counseling and Training Programmes, and organizing the campus recruitment activities of the School. All students are encouraged to attend the training programs for an enhanced performance in the campus interviews. We hand hold our students through career guidance; through motivational activities and counseling, through knowledge sharing activities and through various capacity building measures. The trainees are closely monitored for improvements and gauged through several VST’s and company Mock tests, until they are ready and have gained eligibility.

Programs like JAVA Certification in association with IBM , Network Certification in association with CISCO, DB2 training Certification in association with IBM and Campus Connect in association with Infosys are some of the achievements of the center.

An all comprehensive programme – soft skill aims at enhancing the personality of the students right from the first semester.

Centurion University is awarded “Section-1” Status by Australian Government, Department of Education & Training in March 2016

In Australia India Institute Report, titled “A Very Short Policy Brief: Sustainable Skill Development” in November 2016, the first reference of the policy brief is of Gram Tarang.

Case study by UNESCO, “Centurion University model of skilling” in the UNESCO – PROSPECTS: Volume 44, Issue 2 (2014).

NITI Aayog named Centurion University -Gram Tarang as the best practice reference point in the State of Odisha in their report titled, “State Forward: Best Practices from our States” released by the Honourable Prime Minister on 29th September 2016.

Honourable Prime Minister’s sub-group of 11 Chief Ministers on skill development hosted by NITI Aayog prominently described CUTM and its model of integrating skill with higher education, ensuring appropriateness and relevance of education in October 2015.

Research Report of Ernst and Young title, “Role of Higher Education in Creating Sustainable Livelihoods and Social Enterprises” is on the Model of Centurion University, published on 24th November 2016.

Centurion University is the only University invited by the Honourable Prime Minister to address the Nation on World Youth Skills Day – 15th July 2015. National Skill Mission was commissioned and Skilling India programme was launched by the Prime Minister.

Centurion University has been granted the status of 12b by UGC making it eligible for Central assistance in December 2016.

Centurion University was given A++ ranking in India in the Annual ranking of B-School by “Business India” and ranked third in the state of Odisha.

Centurion University has been accredited with ‘A’ Grade by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Ministry of HRD in November 2015.
